About 2,000 years age the Jews lived in the land we now call Israel. However, the
land was ruled by the Syrians and King Antiochus (also called The Madman). He tried to force the Jews to live under the Syrian gods which, at the time, were the Greek gods.
wonder if Miracles in Tremont knew that when they named their restaurant and featured latkes. I wonder if they even know that is the real name of their famous entree.)
This year Hanukka begins on Sunday evening, December 1. Chevrei Tikva will celebrate it following Shabbat services on Friday, December 6 at 8:30. A dessert potluck and, of course, latkes will follow. Call 932-5551 for more details.▼
THE CRYSTAL CAGE by Sandy Bayer

Holy oil is specially made and sanctioned by the High Priest of the Temple.
They were able to find enough to last one day. However, by a miracle, it lasted eight days until new oil could be produced. For this reason we celebrate the holiday called Hanukkah for eight days. At sundown on the first night we light one candle called the Shammus. With this candle we light one more candle. The following night a new Shammus is lit and with it two candles are lit. This process follows until eight candles are lit.
It is a fun holiday with gifts for everyone. It used to be Hanukka gelt (coins) were given only to the children on each night of the holiday. In more modern times it has become the tradition to give more than coins and not just to the children. The traditional food is called latkes (potato pancakes). The supposed reason for this dish is that the Macabees arrived at a town, did not have time for a full meal, therefore the townspeople gave them latkes which were quick and filling.
This whole holiday is one of miracles; the Jews winning over the more powerful Syrians; the oil for one might lasting eight. (I
